Isuzu D-Max Bullbar Guide (2020+): ADAS-Compatible Options for the New Platform

The 3rd-generation Isuzu D-Max (RG, 2020+) has become one of the most popular touring utes in Australia — a reliable 3.0L turbo diesel, 3500kg towing, class-leading ADAS, and a proper ladder-frame chassis. But like every new-platform ute, the factory bumper is plastic and the ADAS suite was never designed for outback Australian conditions.

This guide covers what fits the new D-Max, what's ADR-legal, how to keep your ADAS working, and what you'll actually pay landed in Australia.

The 2020+ RG is a different platform

The RG D-Max is a ground-up redesign from the MY20-pre models. Wider track, new chassis rails, repositioned radar, revised bumper, new headlight housing, and integrated front parking sensors on higher trims. A pre-2020 D-Max bullbar (RT50) will not fit. Make sure the product description says "2020+" or "RG" or "3rd Gen" — not "RT50".

ADR compliance and ADAS — the non-negotiables

The new D-Max comes with Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning, AEB, and Lane Keep Assist on most trims. Behind the grille sits a 77GHz radar, and the front camera lives behind the windscreen. A bullbar that blocks or misaligns the radar will throw permanent ADAS faults.

What to look for:

  • AS 4876.1-2002 and ADR 69 compliance.
  • Radar-transparent section or cutout sized for the RG radar housing.
  • Camera clearance design — no obstruction of the windscreen camera's field of view.
  • Sensor pods for the front parking sensors (on trims that have them).

If the bar doesn't explicitly state ADAS compatibility for the RG, don't buy it.

Loop, hoopless, or triple-loop?

Single-loop (hoop) bullbar

The mainstream choice. Bonnet protection, aerial mounting, light-bar provision. Typically 80-100kg for steel, 50-70kg for alloy. Suits touring and daily-driver D-Maxes.

Hoopless / comp bar

No overhead hoop. Maximum approach angle, best recovery access. Offers less animal-strike protection — if you're doing regular outback highway km, go with a hoop bar.

Three-loop / commercial bar

Heavy-duty with additional loops around the grille and headlights. Common on fleet D-Maxes and mine-spec builds. Overkill for a weekend tourer.

Winch compatibility

The RG D-Max has room for up to a 12,000lb winch in most bars. Confirm:

  • Mounting pattern (254 x 114mm is standard).
  • Control box placement — external control box provision is preferred for ADAS clearance.
  • Rated recovery points — two front rated points integrated, minimum 5000kg each.

Alloy vs steel on the RG D-Max

The new D-Max's front axle rating is 1400kg. A steel bullbar + 9500lb winch + spotties adds 130-150kg. Manageable on a lightly-built D-Max, but tight on a fully-accessorised tourer. An alloy bar saves 35-45kg and is the right call for most touring builds. Steel wins for fleet, remote work, and heavy winching.

Pricing landed in Australia

  • Alloy hoop bar: $1,590 - $2,090
  • Steel hoop bar, winch-ready: $1,990 - $2,690
  • Steel comp / hoopless bar with rated recovery points: $2,290 - $3,090
  • Commercial triple-loop: $2,600 - $3,400

Professional fitting is $500-$900 in metro areas. ADAS re-calibration after fitting is $150-$250 and worth it.

Fitting notes — what to expect

  • Plan 4-5 hours for a careful DIY fit. Two people minimum.
  • Factory bumper comes off in two pieces.
  • Radar unit transfers to the new bar — every reputable RG bar includes a radar relocation bracket in the kit.
  • Parking sensor pods plug straight into the factory loom.
  • Fog lights and DRLs either relocate or are replaced — check kit contents.
  • ADAS self-calibration usually happens automatically after 10-20 minutes of normal driving.

Three mistakes to avoid

  1. Buying a "RT50/RG compatible" bar. It's not. The two platforms share almost no bodywork.
  2. Ignoring ADAS spec. A bar that blocks the radar will permanently disable AEB — a roadworthy fail.
  3. Skipping re-calibration. Even on bars with correct radar cutouts, a post-fit scan tool calibration is good insurance.
